Project Summary
Formula undertook the construction of a 70m, two-lane, clear span bridge over the Nordenskiold River as part of the Freegold Bypass Project. This complex structure is supported by 30” steel pipe piles driven with a diesel hammer. On top of the pile foundations are cast-in-place abutment caps, pot-style bearings, and a robust steel superstructure. The deck, curbs, approach slabs, and wingwalls are all made of cast-in-place concrete.
Challenges:
- Logistical Hurdles: The remote location of the project presented significant logistical challenges.
- Extreme Weather Conditions: The hot summer temperatures in Carmacks required night-time pours for the deck and approach slabs. To meet project specifications, a water chiller was used to maintain concrete temperatures. Despite the additional cost of the chiller not being reimbursable through project billing, its use was crucial for ensuring the pours met all specifications.
Achievements:
- Collaborative Success: Formula Contractors developed an excellent working relationship with Pelly Construction, the Prime Contractor. This partnership facilitated resource sharing and optimized production on site.
- Environmental and Site Excellence: The cleanliness and organization of the site were consistently praised by environmental monitors, the prime contractor, and the project owner, highlighting Formula’s commitment to maintaining high standards throughout the project.
